The New Tottenham Singers are proud to support the campaign to save The Antwerp Arms. The pub on Church Road, Tottenham is in danger of closing for good. The local community is coming together to try to buy the pub. So far over 300 people have agreed to buy shares and negotiations to buy the pub have begun.
The choir was very happy to provide the soundtrack for the campaign’s promotional video.
Update from the Antwerp Arms Association:
We will close the offer successfully on Thursday.
What we will then want is a pub to buy. The developers have rejected our bid, made on the basis of the value of the property as a business. They want to covert it into residential accomodation, and have priced it accordingly.
Last night, we decided that the way to proceed is to lobby for the local Haringey council to refuse planning permission. Could you help by showing your support in an email to our local MP David Lammy (lammyd@parliament.uk)?
There is a sample letter on the front page of our website www.antwerparms.co.uk.
Thank you. With enough moral support, the project will go ahead.
Obviously, if we do not succeed in buying the pub in a reasonable time, you will get all your money back.
We all know that the Antwerp Arms is a valuable asset for the Tottenham community, and we all want to keep it as a pub. Everyone that is except the current owners. They will only sell at a price which reflects the value of the building as flats.
We are going to have to get political. Please write to the Tottenham MP Dave Lammy to ask him to help us. We want to make it clear that the Haringey Planning Department should refuse planning permission because the local people need a place to meet, eat and drink, and we want to preserve the local environment.
Here’s the sort of letter that we suggest you send: ( cut & paste into your e-mail)
Subject: Community buyout of the Antwerp Arms
Dear Mr Lammy,
As a supporter of the community buyout of the Antwerp Arms, could you please help us prevent Hinterwell Ltd from getting permission to convert the building into residential accommodation?
○ It is needed as a community space – for people to meet, eat and drink
○ It is certified as an Asset of Community Value
○ It has served the residents of Tottenham since the 1820s
○ Our plans show that it is and can remain a viable business
○ We have offered to buy the property valued as a business and have the money to do so
○ The building is part of the conservation area and should not change character
○ The work to enable the conversion would alter the appearance of a locally listed building
○ We also oppose conversion of the upper floor to accommodation with a pub below due to the work needed
Yours sincerely
