NTS is a mixed-voice adult choir based in North London open to all, who aim to unite and represent the community through the joy of singing.
We were established in 2010 and have around forty choristers, singing under the direction of Musical Director Tom Fowkes.
We perform at least twice a year with major concerts usually at Christmas and in the summer, with other events in the local community and beyond throughout the year.
Major works we have performed include:
- Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light: A Requiem
- Mozart’s Requiem
- Rutter’s Gloria
- Bob Chilcott’s A Little Jazz Mass
- Faure’s Requiem
- Handel’s Messiah
Our repertoire is varied; as well as classical and liturgical music we also sing jazz, pop and musical theatre songs (including major excerpts from The Sound of Music, A Christmas Carol and Beauty and the Beast) and carols.
Musical Director: Tom Fowkes
Tom trained at Trinity College of Music, obtaining his degree in Composition and Conducting. He founded The New Tottenham Singers in November 2010 and has remained as Musical and Artistic Director ever since. His portfolio is rich and varied, and has led him to be Musical Director on numerous stage productions in London and further afield, whilst also being in demand as a rehearsal pianist, vocal coach and instrumentalist with Jazz Bands and Big Bands.
As a choral trainer, he has been Director of Music at churches across London including St Laurence, Catford and Hornsey Parish Church, and he is currently Director of Music at both St Saviour’s and St Barnabas churches in Walthamstow where he plays the organ each Sunday and runs a combined community choir.
Tom has taught and lectured as a Musical Theatre specialist, most notably at the Susi Earnshaw Theatre School and Leyton Sixth Form College, at both of which he provided vocal and academic tuition whilst acting as Musical Director for all productions and showcases. He is an advocate for youth music and is dedicated to creating opportunities for young musicians to access high quality choral music of all styles with NTS through the Jojo Sagoe Scholarship scheme for vocalists alongside regular partnerships and projects with the Haringey Music Service for instrumentalists.
For NTS, he has conducted every major performance since 2010 and provides the majority of new orchestrations.
