NTS has over fifty singers rehearsing each week and the main focus in rehearsals is preparation for performances. These performances can take the form of concerts and appearances in festivals and other events in the local community and the North London area.
The choir’s Musical Director is Tottenham resident, Tom Fowkes. Tom is responsible for training us and selecting our repertoire. Ann Carey acts as Assistant Musical Director and she assists Tom by helping him to select the repertoire, taking sectionals and accompanying the choir in rehearsals and performances. We are fortunate to have many supportive members who help with other tasks involved in the day-to-day running of the choir.
We aim to provide enjoyable and rewarding rehearsals which nurture and develop talent in addition to providing a unified, inclusive and vibrant social experience.
We are proud to actively and positively represent Tottenham throughout Haringey, the wider North London area and nationally. In addition to large concerts such as the Broadway-inspired Christmas and All of That Jazz in December 2013 and Mozart’s Requiem in April 2014, alongside other regular appearances locally, we performed John Rutter’s Gloria at St Michael’s, Camden Town in December 2012, opened a Lecture Series with an inaugural concert at St Pancras Old Church in March 2013 and sang Evensong at Merton College Chapel, Oxford in June 2014 at the invitation of the Chaplain to celebrate the college’s 750th Anniversary. In 2015 we were thrilled to sing at the Rugby World Cup match between England and Australia and marked our 5th anniversary with a Gala Christmas Concert. We are passionate about our local community and have developed a special relationship with the London Borough of Haringey’s Music and Performing Arts Service, with whose orchestra and other ensembles we regularly collaborate.
The New Tottenham Singers are always happy to welcome new members of any age or musical experience. You will not be asked to audition, and Tom or Ann can help you choose the correct section (Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass) for your voice if you are not sure. There is no requirement to be a Tottenham resident!
We recommend new members join at the start of terms when we are beginning to study new repertoire. However, if you would like to come along at another time, please do get in touch by emailing email@example.com, or by calling our Communications Officer, Richard, on 07587 415658.
We rehearse at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Tottenham, London N15 4RX from 7.30pm – 9.30pm on Tuesdays during term times (10 Jan to 4th April)
Nearest tube station: Seven Sisters. Buses: 149, 259, 243, 476, 230, 123, 41, 341
Our next term starts on Tuesday 10th January 2017. New members are welcome to join us for their first three rehearsals at no obligation. Members pay £60 per term (or £40 for full time students and OAP’s). Obviously, we do not wish financial concerns to be a barrier to joining, so should you have genuine difficulties paying the full rate and do not qualify for the concession, please contact us in confidence.
Once you have joined the choir, it is expected that you do your best to attend all rehearsals. As a general rule, choristers should try not miss any more than two Tuesday rehearsals each term.
There are three terms each year, and the choir’s season runs from September – July. Our success thus far has been due to the hard work and dedication of our members and we wish this to continue as our numbers grow.
We are an extremely friendly, welcoming group so give us a try – a warm welcome awaits.
